After eight straight victories, the Chicago Steel’s win streak came to an end this past Friday, falling 3-1 to the Des Moines Buccaneers. The Steel are without one of their top goal scorers, Robert Mastrosimone, as he was invited to the USA Hockey World Junior A Challenge in Bonnyville, Alberta. The Steel will be without Mastrosimone until the challenge wraps up December 15th.
The Steel were hungry for a win on Saturday when they faced the last place Omaha Lancers at home in Geneva, IL. A strong outing by Steel goalie, Rielly Herbst, led the team to beat the Lancers 2-1.
Christian Sarlo opened up the scoring for the Steel in the first, banking in a Nick Abruzzesse rebound. Noteworthy back-to-back saves from Herbst and New Jersey Devil prospect Omaha goalie, Akira Schmid, made for an exciting goalie battle late in the opening period. Despite how dominant the Steel were in Omaha’s zone for most of the period Omaha led in shots on goal 10-9 after the first twenty.
The Steel began the second period on the power play due to an Omaha tripping penalty from the end of the first, but no goal game from it. Mathieu De St. Phalle scored at 3:42 to extend the Steel’s lead, 2-0.
Omaha’s Ryan Savage incurred his second penalty of the game, which resulted in many opportunities for the Steel to rack up a larger lead on the power play. While the Steel’s had a strong showing, no goal resulted.
With 2:32 left in the final period, the Omaha Lancers pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, and goal from Minnesota University commit Ryan Savage spoiled a Herbst shutout. Despite the Lancers picking up momentum and a goal in the dwindling minutes, the Steel held on for the win.
The Steel are 9-1-0 in their last 10 games and face the Youngstown Phantoms on Friday, December 14th to try to improve to 10-1-0.
